The way that the stone fortress sits on Spike Island, nobody would think it was only a ten-minute ferry to the beautiful town of Cobh.

The building was built upon the base of an old Irish monastery. But with every renovation parts of the structure are shown throughout the centuries. But the last version of the building would be called “Hell on Earth”.

Ireland was in trouble in 1940 from the Great Famine. Crops wouldn’t survive and millions of the population would be brought to the brink of starving. But what did the government do?

The building on Spike Island would be turned into the biggest prison in the world at the time.

Any man or boy accused of any crime would be thrown into the penitentiary. This had criminals up to fearsome murderers. Soon the prison had an overwhelming 2,300 inmates. Who would never get back gome.

The prison would soon be called “Ireland’s Hell” because of the horrible events that took place there.

In a small room of only 40×18 ft prisoners were crammed. But prisoners who got fresh air didn’t fare much better. They were in a chain gang to perform harsh labor.

People theorize that more than 1,000 people would lose their lives on the rock. And that their ghosts would come back to haunt the grounds.
