The contestants have one thing in common. Many of them have made some really bad choices in life which have resulted in them being in a ton of debt. But everyone has a different background and reason for joining the game. Seong Gi-hun is a gambler who joined the game to pay off his gambling debts.
Cho Sang-woo is wanted by the cops for stealing money from a client. Hwang Jun-ho is an undercover cop who sneaks into the game to search for his missing brother. And Kang Sae-byeok is a defector from North Korea that has to pay her broker to retrieve her family from her country.
