ETrade’s Monkey

In the early aughts, a series of new dotcom businesses were booming, and with them came advertising. Among the advertisers was ETrade. Their commercial, which seemed nonsensical at first, featured a monkey dancing to “La Cucaracha,” and boldly declared that they’d wasted $2 million dollars. Calling attention to the exorbitant cost of a Super Bowl ad was a subversive move, and a memorable one.
