Crew member Dave Hill suggested to the writers that Olly join the Night’s Watch himself, which led to an expanded role that saw him deliver Ygritte’s kill shot and play a major part in Jon Snow’s assassination. Given the amount of sheer hatred fans felt toward the character, O’Connor may have been better off leaving the show while he was ahead.
