You can’t read this song title without imagining Bruce Springsteen scream-singing it. “Born! In The U.S.A.!” It must be a rabble-rousing cry of patriotism, right? Wrong. The song is an ironic form of sarcastic protest, told from the point of view of a Vietnam War veteran returning home to a lack of respect and appreciation.
