Those horns! They’re so peppy, brash, almost aggressively cheerful. And yet, when you really analyze Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al”, you hear he’s using them for ironic purposes. The song is a meandering existential crisis set to a beat. Simon drew from his own personal experiences of frustration and alienation to describe “Al”‘s situation. But still: those horns!
