James “Rhodey” Rhodes in “Iron Man”
In the first “Iron Man” film, which premiered in 2008, Terrence Howard appeared as Tony Stark’s friend Rhodey, who was a member of the United States Air Force. Marvel Studios offered a pay cut to Howard to appear in “Iron Man 2,” but after negotiations fell through, Don Cheadle was brought on to play the character. He has continued to portray Rhodey in all subsequent film appearances.
