Roxanne vs. Roxanne
Tales of altercations between groups can range from petty to interesting, and this next dispute is definitely leaning towards the interesting side. Basically, record producer Marley Marl and disc jockey Mr. Magic wanted to get revenge on hip hop collective UTFO after they failed to show up during a show they were promoting. Lolita Shanté Gooden, a 14-year-old aspiring emcee, offered to get back at the group by doing a diss track of UTFO’s “Roxanne, Roxanne.” Under the guise of a woman named Roxanne Shanté, she was able to do an impressive freestyle rap of the track all in one take. UTFO shot back by enlisting the help of a woman named Elease Jack, creating the character “the Real Roxanne.” The Roxanne songs became huge hits, and so was their feud.
