Sherwood Schwartz came up with the name of Gilligan after looking through a telephone directory in Los Angeles. However, many argue if Gilligan is the character’s first or last name. According to Schwartz, Gilligan is the character’s last name, and his first name is Willy. But Bob Denver, who played Gilligan, believes that Gilligan is his first name.
