Promotion of Scientology
As his acting and producing career flourished, Cruise became increasingly well-known for his promotion of and belief in Scientology. Throughout the 2000s, he repeatedly lobbied influential heads of state to recognize Scientology as a tax-exempt nonprofit. He also spoke out against psychiatry, which he felt should be “outlawed.”
