A research team led by ecologist John Priscu of the University of Montana has been looking for signs of life well beneath the ice of Antarctica. When they drilled into the ice sheets of Lake Mercer on the snowy continent, they found 10,000 bacterial cells per milliliter of water. These signs of life could provide clues about the bacteria that could exist on other unexplored planets, such as Mars.
