Seals Solved an Ancient Ice Mystery
Every year in Antarctica, gaping holes appear in the ice which are called polynyas, and these holes have long confused scientists because they pop up even in the winter when the ice is at its thickest. But recently, researchers have discovered that polynyas form because of winds and the ocean’s currents and they discovered this by using satellite tags attached to wild seals in the area.
