As if out of nowhere, Madeline’s muscles froze. Her thighs locked and she missed her footing. The spectators in the stands stopped cheering and fell completely silent.
She came down hard on the track, but was already scrabbling to get up before she hit the ground. She only had a few seconds before she lost her lead. But she couldn’t move.
