A memory did come back as soon as he touched the strings and began to pick at them. There was no remembrance of who he was or the significance of his guitar.

It was an instinctive, visceral memory that had been stored in the darkest corners of his tormented mind. Muscle memory was at work. His fingers started to play a tune practically by themselves as soon as he touched the guitar.
