Terrified
During the storm, John thought that the creature might have been scared into submission. Perhaps it tried to escape and ended up on the boat after being chased by something.
Its true purpose, however, was much more complicated. There was a reason it needed protection, but it wasn’t the reason John thought it did.
If only he could have known.
