When James saw something clinging to Mr. Minky’s collar, he decided he had to find out what it was. Since the gadget didn’t belong to him, destroying it shouldn’t have been a problem. The best course of action was to disassemble the gadget and inspect its inner workings. In all likelihood, it would be labeled or numbered in some way.
