Mechanic Checks Cop’s Tire, Then Spots Nest Inside
The deputy sheriff who was involved in this story is a member of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) in Illinois, a law enforcement department that employs over 400 people.
The sheriffs of the MCSO are described on the department’s website as “conservators of peace.” No doubt the stories that these officers normally share with their family and friends are drastically different to the one that this officer went home with, and it’s a story he’ll likely tell for a long time!
Welcome Back!
The deputy (who remains unnamed) had just come back from a brief vacation, so he had a few days off from serving and protecting his community. The day he came back to work, he found that his squad car wasn’t roadworthy.
The issue wasn’t too serious, but he needed to bring the car in for some repairs. What a great start back at work from vacation! But this wouldn’t be an ordinary trip to the mechanic.
A Broken Headlight
The deputy sheriff brought his squad car into the local mechanic for some routine maintenance and to fix the car’s broken headlight on the passenger side. The light had simply stopped working, and it wasn’t because of a broken or dead bulb.
The officer thought that the repair would be fairly standard, so he expected to have his car fixed and be back on the road in no time.
Something In The Car
The mechanic started working on the vehicle and immediately saw something extremely strange. No doubt mechanics see odd things all the time, but he had never seen anything like this. Deputy Sandra Rogers of the MCSO spoke to reporters about the specifics.
“The mechanic began replacing the headlight and noticed that the wire had been chewed,” she shared in a statement on June 23, 2017. What could have caused that? Turns out there are lots of possible explanations!
Rodents Are A Likely Cause
There are a multitude of reasons why wiring can be frayed within a vehicle. Rodents, in particular, can get into vehicles when they’re stationary and chew at the wires. These pesky little animals can cause expensive damages!
Whatever caused the issue, the mechanic still needed to fix the headlight. He continued working on the squad car. Let’s just say a broken headlight has never been more interesting!
