There was a large layer of hazardous gas near the bottom of the hole; hydrogen sulfide, to be precise. The existence of this gas in such large quantities could only suggest that the hole’s bottom was empty of oxygen. That meant it couldn’t support any kind of existence.

However, one diver was let out of the submarine to go investigating. What was even more perplexing was what he described when he returned.
