A professor specializing in invertebrates at the Royal Museum of Ontario was shocked when Gillian told him she had been working with blue mussel shells in her sculpture for almost fifteen years. 

“He told me, ‘People don’t realize how poisonous these things are,’” she said. So, ironically, Gillian had literally given her life for her art.
