73. Out Of Patience
I waited till their second day, but.
First day of work: showed up late. WAYYY late. I thought to myself, “Well, it can happen to anybody one time. Traffic goes bad. Whatever. No big deal.”
The second day of work: I couldn’t be in the office, but the job was straightforward enough, so I didn’t worry. When I got back a few hours later, others in the office grabbed me to say that the new guy had shown up late and then had been sleeping at his desk for the 2 or 3 hours I had been gone.
I walked by his desk, and the dude smelled like liquor. I saw him take a sip from the thermos he had brought to work.
He interviewed so well. He was the first guy I ever fired. It sucked. He needed the job, but it was obvious his alcoholism was interfering with every other aspect of his life, and the company was small and unstable enough that we couldn’t afford to do charity work.
I hated it.
