What caused the unique pigment change was a chemical in bile called biliverdin. The puppy’s coat was stained by the chemical when it came into contact with the mother’s amniotic fluid.

Now that they knew what they were dealing with, they asked the vet what it meant for their puppy. They were worried it would affect them long-term. Thankfully the vet put their minds at ease.
