Opening Up
The firemen used heavy machinery to remove the sewage grate. They were anticipating an animal to suddenly spring at them, so that was the first thing they did. A fully developed animal may have attempted to respond swiftly and leap out of the sewer anyhow, despite the fact that it was rather deep. They didn’t know what type of thing they were dealing with, so they had to stay back from the doorway.
