The firemen recognized this was no environment for the infants, even if the mother was close. It was nighttime and freezing, and if the water level rose at all, the animals would have been doomed. The rescue crew, however, was not willing to take that risk and continued with their mission in the hopes of saving as many infants as possible. They hoped that all the babies that were wriggling about within would be okay.
