The firemen replaced the animals in their original locations. Given that the animals hadn’t been discovered in the sewer itself, it was possible that their mother was still seeking for them there. It was impossible to know for sure that this was where she would look, but there was a fair probability that she would detect their scent and hear them. They made sure the infants were secure and comfortable before leaving them at a nearby spot. They set up a watchtower and waited for the mother to come back.
