There was no pressing need for the firemen to keep an eye out for the mother, but they could not bear to see the infants in any more pain. The infants were vulnerable to predators because of how exposed they were. As a result, the infants were only let outside in certain areas and at specific times, and staff members served as a kind of roving guard force. Therefore, they knew for certain that it was their mother, and not another animal, who had discovered them.
