After this incident, everyone in Ivanka’s family saw that the situation was no longer sustainable. They couldn’t keep Koko at their home. It needed to be in the wild, where it belonged.
So they arranged for Koko to be picked up, rehabilitated, and sent back to the jungle of Gabon by a team of expert primatologists. The farewell was sad for Ivanka. She had grown up with that formidable ape. But there was no other option.
