To him, it started to run like clockwork. In exchange for doughnuts, he would stand by the entrance and offer to help customers carry their grocery bags to their cars.
He took care to be courteous and well-mannered. But he was aware of his appearance, wore ragged clothing, and was virtually begging total strangers for cash. While some perceived this as begging and others as offering a service, some regarded it as something quite else.
