The President Responds
President Bill Clinton heard about the plane’s disappearance and ordered the U.S. Navy to assist in the Coast Guard’s search and rescue operation. He also called both Caroline Kennedy and Ted Kennedy to offer his support during this difficult time. Although some criticized the president for mobilizing the U.S. Navy, he defended his decision.
