Wear No Makeup
Clearly a lady of the contemporary day, Jonna does not conform to traditional gender norms. She is not modest in her attire or her love of cosmetics. Made-up faces are strictly forbidden for Amish women. Don’t even bother with a little coat of lip gloss, much less foundation, eyeshadow, or blush. It’s inappropriate for women to wear any makeup at all.
It’s meant to portray sincerity and honesty. Jonna wondered whether she would be asked to conform or if she would be rejected by her relatives. After all, she represented everything that they despised.
