They are Uninsured
The Amish seem to have little interest in health insurance, despite their new enthusiasm for cell phones. Because of the importance placed on generosity in the Christian community, when a member of the “church” incurs mounting medical expenses due to illness (such as cancer), the cost is covered by other members. This implies that the members of their church community and other communities all pay to the expense. Their sense of community is admirable.
