The Cherokee Man Who Started a War
Ned Christie is remembered as a hero to the Cherokee Nation because of his status as a statesman for his people. In 1887, he was accused of killing a United States Marshal in ambush and to try to prove his innocence he evaded the law for five years. This time is now known as Ned Christie’s War, which ultimately ended in him being killed by lawmen. In 1918, a man named Dick Humpheys finally admitted to shooting the Marshal in 1887, proving Christie’s innocence.
