They Stared Each Other Down
Doris saw that the two soldiers who brought her son’s letter were extremely apprehensive when she gazed into their eyes. They fidgeted and averted her eyes, as if hiding or afraid of being found out. Doris wondered whether they read the letter and felt guilty or embarrassed of it.
She also wondered whether the mail had been opened and the note read before she received it. The envelope’s seal may have been changed so they could reveal the letter’s secrets. Doris distrusted the officers and knew in her heart that something was wrong.
