Trying to Have a Conversation
As Emily descended the bus steps, Laura immediately noticed the muddy shoes. The uneasy feeling that had plagued her all day intensified. She plastered on a smile, greeted Emily, and they walked home together, hand in hand. As they walked, Laura attempted to engage Emily in conversation, asking about her day and trying to coax some information out of her daughter that might explain the mud.
