Chaotic Classroom Moments That Still Bother Teachers

User TaedW posted about how their school’s materials regarding substance abuse seemed like Amish people who have never been to the city wrote it. Like a stranger approaching you in the middle of the street and demanding you take their substances.

When he asked the class what their response would be if they were ever offered strange substances the answers were ridiculous. He quieted the children, and told them what would actually happen in situations like these.

He calmly asked the class, “I’m not going to bust you, but has anyone in the room ever taken gum from a friend or classmate?” All the students started to raise their hands, except one. He smiled and asked, “Really, Gunter? You’ve never taken gum from anyone?” The kid looked up at him and said, “No, teacher. I’m the one who has the gum.” He continued with his example by saying, “Well, we’ve met our dealer.”

The children looked at one another with a confused expression. It was clear that the students were not aware of the fact that taking strange substances was as easy as receiving gum from someone they knew. Once the children understood that, they promptly shared their new responses if they were ever offered substances.

The class shared responses such as, “I’m not into that” and “My mom would be mad if I were to try something when I’m still a kid.” It was clear to him that the children had a better understanding of the subject. He ran into a student years later who remembered the story fondly and shared that they found it very funny.
