His small eyes were wide, gazing up at Benjamin with an expression akin to fear. Disconcerted, he patted the boy’s head and returned to the counter, his mind buzzing with unanswered questions. Soon, the woman reappeared, her eyes redder than before. She quickly scribbled something on the bill, paid, and hurried out of the diner with the boy.
