Landing on an Asteroid
Fortunately, there aren’t any asteroids around, at least for now. So how do astronauts practice landing on an asteroid? Simple. They simulate space conditions in an underwater environment and even offer training courses on how to deal with landing on top of an asteroid. Since no one has ever tried this for real, the simulation is just that… a simulation.
NASA also hopes that training astronauts for collecting samples on a simulated asteroid will prepare them to possibly plant a massive explosive on the surface of a real asteroid should the need arise.
