Mabel instructed Richard not to open the door until he had completed one important task: he was to find a woman named Rachel who lived in town and bring her to the shed. The note did not reveal the connection between Mabel and Rachel, nor why it was so crucial for them to open the cellar door together. However, Richard trusted Mabel implicitly.
