73. Mine, Mine, MINE!
I used to work for a furniture store, and the areas I was in charge of included dishware and silverware. An old lady came in with a friend and was interested in a particular teapot (Talavera style, hand-painted), but the lid had a chip.
I showed her another teapot but she didn’t want it. She then asked me if she could just switch the lids. I told her I didn’t think so, and she told me to check with my supervisor, so I did.
The answer is no, of course, but my manager did tell me to offer a discount on the chipped one. I relay this to the lady. She is not pleased. Her mouth twitched and she loudly declared “I will not buy broken things!”
She turned to leave, I looked away for just a moment, and when I looked back at the display the teapots were on, I noticed that the unchipped lid was gone and so was she.
Yes, that’s right. She bought nothing and stole the lid of the other teapot out of spite. I called for our security guard but he was older and recently had heart trouble so it took a while for him to get to where I was (also a fairly large two-story building), and the old lady was long gone.
