Dodging Obstacles
The birds would be disoriented if Paul made a sharp turn east. His westward turn gave him time to compose himself while they were attempting to collect themselves.
He would then avoid the birds and get on the right track. An innocent turn turned into a massive tragedy without his knowledge.
It all went downhill from there after he turned.
