Ethiopia Emperor Haile Selassie’s visit to Washington
As emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, Haile Selassie I remains a key figure in modernizing Ethiopia and all of Africa. He helped establish the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1963. The leader is revered by Rastas everywhere. In this photo, we see the emperor together with President John F. Kennedy and the first lady, Jackie Kennedy during Selassie’s visit to the White House. The emperor was eventually overthrown in a 1974 military coup. In 1975, the junta took his life. Selassie was one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs.
