The tongue of a lion is not dissimilar to the tongue of any other mammal; it is simply bigger and much coarser than the tongue of the typical house cat. The tongue of a lion is used to remove feathers and fur from its prey in addition to cleaning its own fur. That tongue should never be close to your face.
