The Volstead Act
In January of 1919, the 18th Amendment was ratified. It was conceived and written by Wayne Wheeler, a leading advocate for the prohibitionist movement. At the time, it was believed that the ban on alcohol would help relieve poverty and other societal issues. Unfortunately for Wheeler and his colleagues, not everyone was in agreement with this law. Pictured here are a group of young people, showing their disregard for the 18thAmendment, the Prohibition or the Volstead Act. It was a long twelve years before anyone in the country was allowed to drink, legally, again, when the 21st Amendment was ratified. It is the only amendment to ever be repealed.
