1920s Women in Support of the Prohibition
Looking back, it seems like everyone who was around during the Prohibition was against it. That’s far from the case. One of the groups leading the charge, before it was even enacted, was the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union or the WCTU. The group was formed 1873 and devoted itself to social reform. The group grew rapidly, calling for national prohibition, anti-polygamy laws, better working conditions and protective purity legislation. Here, some of the members are showing their support for the ban on alcohol. What’s surprising is that when the 18th amendment was passed, membership dropped; some completely gave up on the cause while others branched off to start their own feminist movements.
