Lucy and Desi Philip Morris Cigarette Ad from 1952
Ads like this haven’t been seen for decades and it’s pretty obvious why. You’re much more likely to see an ad beseeching others to stop the use of regular as well as e-cigarettes, since their side effects have been so well documented. Here, we see two of the most influential people in Hollywood, at the time, encouraging “smart, young Americans to smoke.” The ad even claimed that there would be no “cigarette hangover” the day after; something that has never been scientifically proven. What is known is that smoking cigarettes does tend to make alcohol hangovers worse, although it’s still unclear how or why.
