General Electric Television Ad, 1951
One of the founders of General Electric was Thomas Edison. The company, which was founded in 1892, began making televisions in the 1920s and continued for decades. In this ad, General Electric promises that their 17-inch black-daylite television is as real and lifelike as can be. What’s amazing is the vast difference between go-to television today and back then. This 17-inch device was something many families aspired to have, whereas now, the average TV size in the US is 47 inches; by 2021, it’s expected to go up to 50.
