Divorced and Proud
The very first American couple recorded as divorced was Anne and Dennis Clarke in 1943. Her wish to be divorced was granted since her husband had abandoned her to be with another woman. In 1969, the Divorce Reform Act was passed and it allowed couples to divorce after being separated for two years (if both parties wanted to end the relationship) or five years (if only one party wanted to be done with it). Despite the changes over the years, it was very rare that a person be so happy that they would want to announce it to the world, and on their vehicles no less.
