Vintage Chairlift from 1955
Looking back at pictures from the past, it’s easy to assume that safety was not a big concern of inventors. The first ski lift was believed to have been installed in 1946 by a man named Neil Rafferty. The ropes that held it up were pulled by Army pickup truck tires. Nearly ten years later, this woman is seen riding a lift that just looks like a chair with no seatbelt. That kind of thing would never fly today. Modern ski lifts have a protective metal railing to prevent falling over and emergency buttons just in case of mechanical failure.
