USPS Employment Newspaper Ad from 1900
Today, working for the postal service comes with all kinds of benefits, as well as paid time off. People have gotten used to these things over the years, but just over a century ago, this was not the case. To point out the obvious, there were no women in the postal service. The other thing is that overnight delivery was not a thing, instead, it could take months for a package (including a simple letter) to be delivered, with the threat of danger at every turn. That’s why USPS needed young, skinny, wiry boys “willing to risk death” to deliver mail in a timely manner. The line about orphans being preferred should not escape your notice.
