A Colorized Look at Union Soldiers in 1863

Public Domain

The Civil War is often said to be caused by a number of factors, but the most important dealt with the differences in beliefs about slavery where the north and south of the country was concerned. Because large-scale (profitable) farming depended heavily on enslaved African Americans, southerners feared that the backbone of their economy was at risk. So in 1861, the war officially began. Pictured in this now colorized image, are Union soldiers, men who fought for the Northern Army and eventually defeated the Confederate States Army in the Civil War.
