Stevie moved to Detroit with his mother. Before the age of ten, he trained himself to play instruments such as the piano, and drums. His lack of sight simply increased his sensitivity to music and, in some ways, aided in the development of his musical genius.

He drew the attention of several Motown talent scouts when he was barely 11 years old, and he published his first record just a few months later. The events behind his signing with Motown at such an early age are incredible.
